MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing
A less invasive procedure.
MAKOplasty® is an innovative surgical treatment option that allows the affected knee to be resurfaced rather than replaced. It is best suited for adults whose early to mid-stage osteoarthritis has not progressed to all three compartments of the knee. This is the newest technique in bone and tissue sparing knee implant surgery.
How does MAKOplasty® work?
An orthopedic surgeon performs MAKOplasty® by controlling the RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System with total precision and accuracy. The system features real-time visual, tactile and auditory feedback, so the surgeon can resurface only the diseased portion of the knee, keeping the healthy bone and surrounding tissue intact. The surgeon secures an implant in the joint, allowing the knee to move smoothly again.
The benefits of MAKOplasty®.
Because MAKOplasty® is less invasive, the actual surgery and recovery may be much easier on the patient. The procedure can be performed on an inpatient basis. Hospital stays average from one to three days; with ambulatory patients returning home the same day. Patients often are permitted to walk soon after surgery, drive a car in the first few weeks, and return to normal daily activities shortly after.
With MAKOplasty®, you can expect relief. Other benefits may include:
• Smaller incisions, less scarring
• Reduced blood loss, less risk of complications
• Shorter hospital stay than traditional knee replacement surgery
• Typically covered by most Medicare approved and private health insurers
• More rapid recovery
• Less implant wear and loosening
• More natural-feeling knee following surgery
• Back to work, back to daily activities soonerAre you a candidate for MAKOplasty®?
The most common surgical knee intervention for osteoarthritis is a total knee replacement, where the natural joint is removed and replaced with an artificial implant. This treatment option is usually offered to patients with advanced osteoarthritis of the knee. However, if you have early to mid-stage osteoarthritis in one or two of the knee’s three compartments, MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing may be the more appropriate solution.
Questions to ask your surgeon.
• Is osteoarthritis a factor in my knee pain?
• Will reducing activity, taking pain or prescription medication, getting injections or adding physical therapy help ease my pain?
• Would a knee replacement or partial knee resurfacing procedure provide relief from my knee pain?
• Am I a candidate for the MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing procedure?
• What are the benefits and risks involved with knee replacement surgery or the MAKOplasty® procedure?
• How long will it take to recover from a total knee replacement surgery? From a MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing?
• How long can I expect the implant to last?
• How does my age affect the proper treatment for my condition?
